Essential to understanding the state of animal welfare in our community and nationwide is statistical transparency. Longmont Humane Society (LHS) is a proud participant in Shelter Animals Count, a coalition collecting information about sheltered animals nationwide to build a meaningful database to assess animal welfare progress and have a positive, life-saving impact. Additionally, LHS annually provides essential statistics to the Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act (PACFA) Program which is dedicated to protecting the health and well-being of shelter animals in Colorado.

LHS internally tracks essential measurements on a yearly basis to get a broad idea of community needs and shelter successes. Two of the primary measurements used are:

Length of Stay
Number of days a dog or cat stays at LHS, broken down (1) date of entry into the shelter until outcome and (2) date an animal becomes available for adoption until outcome.

2019: 29.3 days cats/19 days dogs
2018: 24 days cats/17 days dogs

From Date Available for Adoption to Outcome
2020: 6.8 days cats/8 days dogs
2019: 10.6 days/11.2 days dogs
2018: 8 days cats/9 days dogs

Live Release Rate (LRR)
LRR is a meaningful parameter to indicate a community’s progress toward improving outcomes for its animals. LRR is calculated by dividing the number of animals that leave LHS alive through adoption, return-to-owner, or transfer to another non-profit agency that can guarantee a home for all of the animals it receives from LHS, by the total number of live animals received in any given year.
