Spirit’s Transformation
Spirit was left in one of our night-drop kennels in early September. Emaciated and mostly blind, she was frightened but happy to greet the animal welfare team when they opened the kennel. Just the sight of her was heartwrenching, but we knew there was hope for this sweet girl. Spirit was taken immediately to the veterinary team for evaluation where they discovered she was dehydrated, and suffered from diabetes, advanced cataracts, and dental issues. She was given subcutaneous fluids and started on a tailored regimen of weight restoration with insulin for her diabetes.
Over the next two months, Spirit was carefully monitored by the veterinary and welfare teams to ensure that her progress remained steady. There were some rough patches in her recovery, but she had so much “spirit” that she would always rally – she embodied her name completely. When she was well enough, she was spayed and underwent dental surgery. With all the tender loving care she received, Spirit recovered nicely.
Today Spirit is a happy, outgoing sweetheart! One of her caretakers, Ashley, shared this update:
“The most important thing about Spirit is that she’s always happy without fail, and she’s been that way since the day she came in. Despite her past, she is able to trust and love so easily. She adores attention – every pat or cuddle is greeted with enthusiastic wags and obvious appreciation. She’s often so excited to see the healthcare staff in the morning that it’s difficult to get her to sit still for her medical care.
She loves food, definitely loves to snuggle, and has so much life in her that it’s hard to imagine not only that she’s a senior dog but also that she had such a rough life before coming to LHS.
Although she can’t see much, she learns super quickly. I often let her out of her kennel to roam the clinic and she does zoomies all around the clinic and hardly ever runs into anything! It’s pretty impressive. She also loves her doggo friends and enjoys playgroup time.”
Spirit’s greatest wish is to find her forever family. If you have room in your heart and home for a senior snuggle buddy, Spirit would love to meet you!
Your support and generosity helped us care for Spirit when she needed us the most. And your gift this holiday season will give hope to thousands of homeless, sick, injured, and abused pets just like her.
