“Come!” Cracking the Code of a Reliable Recall

Recall, or teaching your dog to come when called, can be one of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of dog training.  It’s also a vital skill for your dog’s safety and freedom! But what do you do when your dog seems to have selective hearing, especially when there are exciting distractions around? The key lies in making “come!” the most exciting word in your dog’s vocabulary.

Think about it from your dog’s perspective. If they associate “come!” with a boring walk or a scolding for getting into the trash, they might not be so eager to respond. Instead, focus on building a positive association with the cue.

Use an enthusiastic, upbeat tone of voice – almost like you’re inviting your dog to a party! When they do come, shower them with praise, treats, or a fun game of tug-of-war.  Remember, you want your dog to think that coming to you is the best thing ever!

Don’t be afraid to repeat the “come!” cue if your dog doesn’t respond immediately.  Keep your tone light and encouraging, and gradually increase the distance and distractions as your dog becomes more reliable. If your dog is hesitant, try running away from them while calling them – it might seem counterintuitive, but dogs have a natural instinct to chase, and this can make you seem much more interesting!
