Lost/Found Report

If you have lost your pet, the best approach is come to the shelter to file a lost report in person and walk through our facility to identify your animal. You may also fill out a report online using the form on this page. We will take lost reports over the phone, but in-person or the on-line form are your best options. We suggest you come in as often as possible to check if your pet is here. Animals come through our doors 24/7, and due to the volume we may be unable to verify by phone if your pet is in our shelter. Only YOU can identify your pet. Photos of your pet are most helpful to us along with a detailed description of your animal.

After filling out the form, you are encouraged to follow up by emailing a photo or photos to info@longmonthumane.org. Colorado state law requires an animal be held for a period of 5 days after which time the animal legally belongs to the Longmont Humane Society if not reclaimed. This is why it is also important to check our adoption floor, as your pet may already be available for adoption.

If you have found a pet, please contact us to share details about the animal and check if we have any matching lost reports: 303-772-1232. If the pet is wearing a city license, we can trace the owner’s contact information. If you’re unable to care for the animal, we’ll guide you on the next steps. Depending on your location, you may either bring the animal to us or contact your local animal control officer. Additionally, we can scan the pet for a microchip, as many dogs and cats may not have collars or identification tags.

Why We Can Only Accept Stray Animals from Our Contracted Jurisdiction:

At Longmont Humane Society, we are deeply committed to providing care and shelter for animals in need. However, we can only accept stray animals found within the specific areas covered by our contracts with Longmont and Firestone City Limits. Here’s why:

  1. Contractual Agreements: Our shelter operates under agreements with local municipalities to provide services such as stray animal intake, care, and rehoming. These contracts define the geographic areas we are responsible for and fund us accordingly.
  2. Resource Allocation: To ensure the animals in our care receive the best possible treatment, we must prioritize those from our contracted areas. Taking in animals from outside this jurisdiction could strain our resources, such as space, staff, and funding.
  3. Preventing Overcapacity: Maintaining proper capacity is essential to providing humane care. Accepting animals from outside our jurisdiction could overwhelm our shelter, putting all the animals at risk.

If you find a stray animal outside our contracted areas, we encourage you to contact the shelter or animal control agency serving that location. They are best equipped to assist in reuniting the animal with its owner or providing the necessary care.

Thank you for understanding and supporting our mission to care for animals responsibly and compassionately.
